Preserving the Past
to Protect the Future

Punchao is a nonprofit based in Peru dedicated to the ethical excavation and preservation of sacred sites. Through historical research, local partnerships, and cultural stewardship, we protect heritage while honoring the living traditions it comes from.
About Punchao
Led by Jorge Calero & Mildred Fernandez, and their Cusco-based team of archeologists, Punchao works with local experts, lead researchers, archaeologists, and Indigenous elders to carry out field research grounded in both scientific rigor and ancestral knowledge. Our mission is to protect Peru’s cultural legacy while creating sustainable opportunities for local communities.

Current Projects

Chincana Project
Our flagship project explores the ancient Inca tunnels (Chincanas) long thought to run beneath the city of Cusco. Backed by local and national permits, our team is combining drone footage, ground-penetrating radar, and hands-on excavation to uncover what lies beneath.

More Exciting Projects Coming Soon!
With our pending projects at Hatun Vilcabamba and Paititi, we will be working on incredible, history-making discoveries.
